Introducing Be Braver Web Design

After 25 years of building websites, we're giving web design its own home. Here's why we created be braver web design and what it means for small businesses.

We’ve been building websites since 1999. That’s over 25 years of helping businesses get online, stay online, and look good doing it. Now, we’re giving web design its own dedicated brand — and we think it’s about time.

A bit of history

Be braver web design is part of the be braver Ltd family of brands. Our founder, Axel Segebrecht, started designing and hosting websites back in 1999, when dial-up was still the norm and having a website at all put you ahead of the competition. We incorporated as be braver Ltd in 2008 and have been trading ever since.

Over the years, we’ve grown into several areas — but web design has always been at the heart of what we do. It’s the thing we started with, and it’s the thing we keep coming back to.

Why a separate brand?

The honest answer is that busy markets need clear messages. When you offer lots of different services under one roof, it can be hard for customers to find exactly what they need. We wanted to make it easy.

By giving web design its own presence, we can focus entirely on what matters to people looking for a website: straightforward pricing, quality design, and a service that doesn’t leave you scratching your head.

Be braver web design exists to do one thing well — build brilliant websites for small businesses at a fair, fixed price.

From WordPress to static sites

For most of our 25 years, we built websites using WordPress. It’s the most popular content management system in the world, and for good reason. It’s flexible, it has a massive ecosystem of plugins and themes, and most developers know how to work with it.

But here’s the thing we’ve learnt over the years: most small businesses don’t actually need WordPress.

WordPress is brilliant for large, complex websites with hundreds of pages, user accounts, e-commerce shops, and content that changes every day. For a five or ten page business website, though, it’s a bit like using a lorry to pop to the shops. It’ll get you there, but it’s more than you need — and it comes with baggage.

The WordPress problem for small businesses

WordPress needs regular updates. The core software, the plugins, and the theme all need patching to stay secure. Miss an update and you could be leaving the door open to hackers. We’ve seen it happen more times than we’d like to admit.

Then there’s speed. WordPress generates each page on the fly, pulling content from a database every time someone visits. That takes time — sometimes quite a lot of it, especially on cheaper hosting. Your visitors notice, and so does Google.

And hosting? WordPress needs a proper server with PHP and a database. That’s not free, and it’s not always cheap.

Why static websites are better for most small businesses

A static website is exactly what it sounds like — the pages are pre-built and ready to go. There’s no database, no server-side processing, and no plugins to update. When someone visits your site, they get the page straight away. No waiting around.

Here’s what that means in practice:

It’s fast. Really fast. Static sites regularly score 100 on Google’s PageSpeed tests. That’s good for your visitors and good for your search rankings.

It’s secure. With no database and no server-side code, there’s nothing to hack. No SQL injection, no plugin vulnerabilities, no panicking over missed security updates.

It’s cheap to host. Static files are tiny and simple to serve. That’s why we can offer free hosting for life with every package — it genuinely costs us very little to keep your site online.

It’s reliable. Fewer moving parts means fewer things that can go wrong. Your site stays up, full stop.

We use Hugo, a modern static site generator, to build every website. It lets us create beautiful, responsive designs that work on every device, load in a fraction of a second, and meet the highest accessibility standards.

Built for small businesses

We’ve spent enough time in this industry to know what small businesses actually want from a web designer. It’s not a lengthy discovery phase, a 40-page proposal, or an invoice that makes your eyes water. It’s a good-looking website, delivered on time, for a price you agreed upfront.

That’s exactly what we offer. Three packages — Starter at £690, Pro at £990, and Pro+ at £1,290 — each with a clear scope, no hidden fees, and free hosting included. You know what you’re getting and what you’re paying before we write a single line of code.

Every site we build meets WCAG AAA accessibility standards, which means it works for everyone — including people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, or high-contrast displays. We think that’s how the web should be, so we don’t charge extra for it.
